Cleaning Your Home for the Fall Season | Hogan Homes

You probably do some spring cleaning every year, but it’s also essential that you show your home some love during the fall season. When the days start getting shorter, the air becomes crisp, and your thoughts turn to cozying up near the fireplace, it’s high time to invest a couple of days in fall cleaning.

Spring isn’t the only season to deep clean your home. Fall offers the ideal time to stash your summer sports gear, organize your cabinets, and start figuring out where you hid the holiday decorations last spring.

Read on for our tips on fall cleaning.

Get your carpets and upholstery cleaned

The summer season is sweaty and dusty, and your carpets know that all too well, especially if you have pets who shed. Now is high time to deep clean all the summer away from your rugs, upholstery, and carpets! Check for stains or spots, and don’t forget to use a crevice tool to vacuum those hard-to-reach areas.

Expand your reach

Go beyond the usual chores of mopping, dusting, and vacuuming. Look up and remove all the dust and such from the light fixtures, the corners of the ceilings, and ceiling fans. Wipe down the baseboards, move the furniture and clean the areas underneath. Send those dust bunnies scurrying.

Tackle the refrigerator and pantry

Go over the contents of your refrigerator and pantry and check for expiration dates. Throw all the items that have overstayed their welcome. Remove every shelf and clean it, one shelf at a time. Once you are done cleaning the inside, check the exterior. Be sure to dust or clean the coils since buildup can decrease the performance of your appliance.

Don’t forget the laundry

Wash all mattress covers, comforters, bed skirts, pillows, blankets, curtains, slipcovers, and throws. Turn your mattresses end-to-end and front-to-back and vacuum them thoroughly.

Winterize

It isn’t glamorous, and you often hear this tip regarding landscaping, but it is just as important that you winterize your home interiors. For instance, not only will winterizing your kitchen will make it look brighter and smell fresher, but it will also keep grease buildup and germs under control. Trim your trees, clean out your gutters, give your stove a good cleaning, and winterize your grill. Aside from regular maintenance, remove and clean the fixtures, wash the curtains if there are any, and take inventory of the cans and bottles that have taken up residence under the sink.

There are a lot of things we love about the fall season, and as we lean into the colder months it can be tempting to hide under the sheets with a cup of warm cocoa. While we inspire everyone to make the most out of the season and enjoy it, we also want to encourage families to take a few important steps this season – like fall cleaning — to keep your home healthy and safe.
